Cadmium in Coca-Cola Glasses Prompts Recall

Coca-Cola announced that it is recalling 88,000 drinking glasses because one glass in each of the 22,000 four-glass sets of shed the toxic metal cadmium. Only the all-red glass designed to look like a can of Coca-Cola is implicated.

Coca-Cola glasses did not meet company’s standards

The Coca-Cola drinking glasses are the latest to be highlighted in an investigation by The Associated Press this past summer. The AP commissioned laboratory testing of glasses that depict movie and comic book characters such as Superman and the Tin Man as part of its ongoing investigation into dangerous metals in children’s products.
The inquiry found that the enamel on the China-made glasses exceeded federal limits for lead in children’s products by up to 1,000 times, as well as high levels of cadmium. That finding prompted McDonald’s to recall 12 million glasses on June 4, 2010, because the “Shrek” movie characters on the glasses were shedding cadmium, an essential pigment to make the color red.
According to a news report, the Coca-Cola Company said that only the all-red Coke glass in the four-glass set “did not meet our quality expectations,” even though the low levels of cadmium on the outside of the glasses “do not pose a safety hazard or health threat.” The Coke Zero, Diet Coke, and Sprite glasses do not warrant concern.
Cadmium is a known carcinogen that can damage the bones and kidneys, especially in young children and if it accumulates over time. A visit to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website and a search for “cadmium” will show that dozens of recalls and alerts have been made regarding the presence of cadmium in children’s toys, clothing, and other products.
If the latest recall has you seeing red, it may be because you have Coca-Cola drinking glasses that have cadmium in their decorative motif. Consumers who bought the Coca-Cola glasses from the company’s online store will receive an automatic credit, while anyone who purchased the glasses in retail shops will be informed about what action they can take starting November 30.

Most Bingers Are Not Alone In Drinking

New research strongly suggests that binge drinking often occurs in settings that dramatically increase the risk of injury to bingers and others, a disturbing finding considering that binge drinking accounts for approximately half of the 75,000 alcohol-attributable deaths in the United States every year and opens the door to a host of dangerous risk behaviors.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) epidemiologist Timothy Naimi, M.D., M.P.H., who presented his data during the Conference of State and Territorial Epidemiologists national conference this week in Denver, almost half of all binge drinking occurs in public places. Two-thirds of the time, beer is the beverage of choice among binge drinkers, and it is readily available, even to underage drinkers.
Dr. Naimi’s findings are from a CDC study that examined data from 14,150 respondents to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey Binge Drinking Module during 2003 and 2004. The results confirm that binge drinking can have serious consequences.
"Overall, 12 percent of binge drinkers reported driving during or soon after binge drinking," Dr. Naimi says, "meaning they were risking injury or death not only for themselves but also their passengers, other drivers and pedestrians."
The study found that 42 percent of those who drove after binge drinking were coming from a bar or club, and that 20 percent of those binge drinking at bars and clubs subsequently operated a motor vehicle. On average, they consumed more than eight drinks during their most recent binge bout. In addition, many binge drinkers were not old enough to legally purchase alcohol. However, 20 percent of underage respondents reported being able to buy their own alcohol at a store, bar, or restaurant.
While there are a number of effective policies to reduce excessive drinking, Dr. Naimi concludes that current prevention efforts are "grossly inadequate." He says research supports the aggressive implementation of effective evidence-based strategies to reduce binge drinking, such as increased alcohol taxes and enhanced enforcement of minimum legal drinking age laws. The research also points to the need to continue or step up surveillance of the context in which binge drinking occurs.

Chris Henry Donated Organs to Five People

The sudden and tragic death of NFL wide receiver Chris Henry provided life for others through organ donation. LifeShare of the Carolinas confirmed that Henry was an organ donor and that his organs were given to at least five people.
Henry, 26, was killed after falling out of the bed of a pickup truck and suffering massive head trauma. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, speaking at Henry’s memorial service, said that Henry’s legacy would be a “good person who made mistakes, then sought to better himself.”
The Cincinnati Bengal’s organization will be a part of an Ohio TV ad campaign to raise awareness of organ donations and to encourage people to become donors. Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer received a tissue donation when he suffered a knee injury two years ago and will be a part of the campaign.
"When it's a high-profile person or high-profile case, this really brings awareness that, wow, lives were saved as a result of something so tragic," said Andi Johnson, a representative of Life Center, a group that raises awareness in Cincinnati. "We're really excited to have his support and the Bengals organization's support on such an important issue."
According to national statistics, over 21,000 organ and tissue transplants were performed in the United States from January to September 2009. Approximately 105,000 people remain on the waiting list as of 12/15/2009 with names added every 11 minutes. A national report card from Donate Life America showed an increase of 9 million donor designations over the last 18 months, bringing the total number of registered donors in the United States to almost 80 million.
Most of the organs used in transplants come from people who have suffered brain death as the result of an accident, heart attack, or stroke. The organs and tissues that are in good condition are removed in a surgical procedure and transplanted within 6 and 72 hours after harvest. Organs such as the heart, lung, intestine, liver, kidneys and pancreas can be donated. Other tissue that can be used include the corneas of the eyes, skin, bone, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.
Donate Life America estimates that 90% of Americans support organ donation, but only 30% know the essential steps to take to become a donor. They give this advice for those seeking to become organ donors:
  1. Register with your state donor registry. Most states, but not all, have donor registries. A list of states can be found at http://organdonor.gov.
  2. Designate your decision on your driver’s license. Do this when you obtain or renew your license.
  3. Sign a donor card now. Carry the donor card with you until you can designate your donation decision on your driver’s license or join a donor registry.
  4. Talk to your family about your donation decision. Help your family understand your wish to be an organ and tissue donor before a crisis occurs. Then they will be prepared to serve as your advocate for donation.

Spectral Improves Sepsis Patient Management With EAA-Toraymyxin

Spectral Diagnostics announced that data demonstrating the clinical utility of its EAA Endotoxin Activity Assay in combination with Toray Medical’s therapeutic column, Toraymyxin, was presented at the Practical Aspects of Extracorporeal Blood Purification in Intensive Care Medicine.
Dr. Alexander Romaschin, Head of Clinical Biochemistry at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and Associate Professor in the Department of Lab Medicine and Department of Surgery at University of Toronto, presented on the effectiveness of sepsis patient management with the use of the combination of Spectral’s EAA assay, the only FDA cleared diagnostic for the measurement of endotoxin, and the Toraymyxin column, which removes endotoxin from the bloodstream. Dr. Romaschin’s presentation was entitled %26quot;Diagnostic and Prognostic Implications of Endotoxemia based on Measurements Using the Endotoxin Activity Assay%26quot;. In addition, Dr. Hisataka Shoji presented data from the Japanese experience using the EAA/Toraymyxin combination.
"There was great enthusiasm for this approach to managing sepsis patients from this prestigious audience of medical doctors from across Russia," said Rob Verhagen, Vice President, Business Development of Spectral. Spectral recently announced that it has expanded its collaboration agreement with Toray to include Russia.
"Dr. Romaschin’s data reaffirms the clinical utility of EAA in combination with extracorporeal blood purification devices, such as Toraymyxin. This combination is gaining increasing recognition and acceptance globally as an effective way to diagnose, treat and monitor patients with endotoxemia," added Dr. Paul Walker, President and CEO of Spectral.
About Toraymyxin
Toraymyxin, a blood purification device, absorbs the bacterial toxin (endotoxin) that causes sepsis and septic shock using a special fiber. It consists of a plastic cylindrical container filled with a special fiber composite immobilized with the antibiotic polymyxin B, which has high affinity for endotoxin. In 1993, Toray received approval for manufacturing and marketing of the product from the "Health and Welfare Ministry of Japan," and Toray Medical has been marketing it since 1994.

Doctors Without Borders Clinics Damaged in Haiti

All three of Haiti’s Doctors Without Borders medical facilities are out of commission in Haiti, where a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Port-Au-Prince, the country’s capital. About 800 medical personnel were working in Haiti when the disaster struck yesterday, and sadly, not all of them are accounted for at this time.
NPR reports that one of the group’s facilities collapsed and the other two are so badly damaged that they had to be abandoned. The group is still providing care to the Haitian citizens in tents, treating traumatic injuries, crush wounds, and burns that occurred from exploding gas containers in collapsing buildings. Although they cannot provide surgical care without the appropriate facilities – all five medical centers in the area were also badly damaged and are non-functioning - they are offering first aid and stabilization as much as possible.
Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organizations created in France in 1971. Today, the group provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect or catastrophe. In 1999, MSF received the Nobel Peace Prize.
The group operates independently of any political or religious group. Eighty-nine percent of MSF’s overall funding comes from private sources. On any one day, more than 27,000 committed doctors, nurses, epidemiologists, laboratory technicians, and mental health professionals provide assistance around the world.
In 2006, Doctors Without Borders gave more than 9 million outpatient consultations, delivered 99,000 babies, treated 1.8 million people for malaria, treated 150,000 malnourished children, provided medical therapy to 100,000 with HIV/AIDS, and vaccinated 1.8 million people against meningitis – among its many accomplishments.
In Haiti, more staff from Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is expected to arrive in the coming days, including a 100-bed hospital with an inflatable surgical unit.
